We’re always coming up with new ideas! I guess that’s why we’re called AwarenessIDEAS. Once a month I create a “newsletter” for our company’s 3 divisions: AwarenessIDEAS.com, AwardsIDEAS.com and FLEXi Display Marketing (flexidisplay.com). “Newsletter” is in quotes because it is more of a collection of creative ideas, designs and images to inspire readers. There are ideas to help with your efforts in employee awareness, environmental awareness, recognition programs and displays.

The theme for March is Earth Day 2010. We’ve added many new designs, products and great ideas for Earth Day. It’s only a month away, so now is a good time to start thinking of ways to celebrate and make a difference.

Most people today know that recycling is a good idea. The problem is that people have many concerns today and recycling is somewhere buried under: their bosses current need, the business crises of the day, an ill child, personal financial insecurity, their spouse just losing their job, an elderly parent and it goes on.

Recycling posters placed in work and community areas becomes a good reminder that may get noticed and resonate… and may cause a decision to take action. One thing is clear, not posting announcements of needs and suggested actions keep important issues under peoples mental radar.

Holiday Recycling Answers

Are shiny corrugated cardboard boxes recyclable? Yes, recycling isn’t just for brown boxes. If you have a paper box that has three layers of paper (one wavy layer in between two flat layers) it’s recyclable with corrugated cardboard, no matter how thin the layers. If it’s still intact, save it to package the next present you give.

Big paper shopping bags? These are great to reuse for future shopping trips. If it’s ripped, the paper can be reused as wrapping paper. But if neither of those uses is an option, paper shopping bags of any color (not just brown and including glossy bags) are recyclable

Plastic shopping bags? Hopefully, you don’t have much of these because you’ve reused canvas bags, but if you do have ripped bags that can’t be reused, they can be recycled if they’re marked with a #2 or #4 inside the chasing arrows recycling symbol

Dead holiday light strings (cords)? Yes, recyclable. Surprised? Electrical cords for holiday lights and dead extension cords can be recycled-if the light bulbs have been removed. The light bulbs themselves are not recyclable.

Holiday Gift Recycle

Some people recycle holiday gifts. That serving platter from Bermuda? Recycle. “Hand carved” chopstick set? Recycle. Aunt Susie’s fruitcake? Recyc…on second thought, just toss that!

I’m kidding, of course, but gift recycling DOES seem to be a holiday tradition. Some people think it’s smart; while others are appalled. No matter where you are on the subject, there’s one way to get recycling and holiday gift-giving together in a way that works for everyone: Give a recycling reminder gift! Think it sounds crazy? Is it any crazier than a Chia Pet or a pair of gloves that don’t fit?

Here are a couple of ideas:

A gift of recycling is a gift today…and a gift for the future…for ALL of us.

At least here in the States, this coming weekend is the biggest shopping day of the year. but even after Black Friday, shopping for holiday gifts and dinners will really be ramping up until the end of December.

METALS

1. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours — or the equivalent of a half a gallon of gasoline.
2. More aluminum goes into beverage cans than any other product.
3. Once an aluminum can is recycled, it can be part of a new can within six weeks.
4. During the time it takes you to read this sentence, 50,000 12-ounce aluminum cans are made.
5. An aluminum can that is thrown away will still be a can 500 years from now!
6. There is no limit to the amount of times an aluminum can can be recycled.

PAPER

1. To produce each week’s Sunday newspapers, 500,000 trees must be cut down.
2. Recycling a single run of the Sunday New York Times would save 75,000 trees.
3. If all our newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year!
4. If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we would save about 25,000,000 trees a year.

PLASTIC

1. Plastic bags and other plastic garbage thrown into the ocean kill as many as 1,000,000 sea creatures every year!
2. Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic beverage bottles every hour!
3. Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as buring it in an incinerator.
4. American throw away 25,000,000,000 styrofoam coffee cups every year.

GLASS

1. Every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper. All of these jars are recyclable!
2. The energy saved from recycling one glass bottle can run a 100-watt light bulb for four hours. It also causes 20% less air pollution and 50% less water pollution than when a new bottle is made from raw materials.
3. A modern glass bottle would take 4000 years or more to decompose — and even longer if it’s in the landfill.

MISC.

1. More than 20,000,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.
2. Every week about 20 species of plants and animals become extinct!
3. McDonald’s saves 68,000,000 pounds of packaging per year just by pumping soft drink syrup directly from the delivery truck into tanks in the restaurant, instead of shipping the syrup in cardboard boxes!
4. The largest environmental organization in the world is the National Wildlife Federation. It has 5,600,000 members!
5. Rainforests are being cut down at the rate of 100 acres per minute!
